5 iOS Apps for Long Distance Relationships

The internet has taken the possibilities of having romantic Long Distance Relationships to new heights. Ever since instant messaging (IM) came onto the scene people have been able to meet others with common interests and spark up relationships regardless of the distance between the two. Technology also allows those romantically involved to stay involved if one of them has to move or leave for an extended period of time.

Websites like Parship UK make it easy to strike up a relationship with someone you’ve never met before. Up until Apple’s iOS came onto the scene long distance relationships basically consisted of calls, texts, IMs and Facebook chats, but now there are whole new possibilities for long distance relationships. As they always say in this day and age, ‘there’s an app for that’. Actually, there are five.

1. Skype

Many people believe Skype revolutionised the way people can communicate, but it’s also just a great tool for long distance lovers. Skype works as an online phone service that allows people to make calls anywhere in the world. The best part is that if two people both have Skype accounts they can talk for free, regardless of where they are in the world. They can even have video chats instead of just staring at a bunch of words for the entire conversation. If two people are in a long distance relationship then getting the Skype app is pretty much mandatory.

2. Videolicious

Skype is a great way to get some face time in with a long distance love, but there are times when there just isn’t enough time to actually sit down and have a chat. This is where the Videolicious app comes in. The app allows a person to make a quick video and send it to their significant other. The app also allows the sending of photos and can even play the couple’s song during a video montage created by either user. Videolicious is perfect for those quick, almost face-to-face ‘I love you’s.

3. HeyTell

HeyTell works like a glorified walkie-talkie. It allows long distance lovers to send quick voice messages to each other that can go back and forth quicker than a regular text message. Even when the app is closed it will send a push notification to a device letting someone know that their significant other has sent a voice reply.

For those who like to get a little mushy and show off their affection it is also possible to export each individual message to Facebook, Twitter, and emails. There is also a feature in the app that allows lovers to know exactly where each other are while sending a message. This can be a romantic thing, or slightly overbearing, but that is all in the minds of the couple.

4. Words With Friends

There is no question that relationships aren’t just about face time and conversation. This applies to all relationships, especially long distance relationships. Couples have to be able to have some fun together, and a little friendly competition never hurts either. The Words With Friends app can accomplish all of this.

The app even has that great feature that allows the two people playing to chat during the game, so there is no issue of having to switch back and forth between apps. The couple can share a little trash talk or even give each other helpful hints, because everyone knows they love when their significant other supports them.

5. Pair

Pair may very well be the ideal app for long distance relationships. The app slightly resembles the Facebook app in appearance, but it was specifically designed for lovers. Everyone knows that friends can get a little queasy at the sight of mushy messages between lovers on the Facebook Timeline, so Pair creates a timeline just for the couple that only they can see. Each person can only be paired to one other person; this is of course meant to be for their lover.

The app allows basic functions like sharing messages, videos, photos, and locations with each other, but goes even further to keep a couple going strong. Couples can also create mutual drawings together and have joint to-do lists. One of the most sentimental features is called the “thumb kiss”. If the person happens to touch the same spot on their device that their lover is touching the devices will simultaneously vibrate, giving the couple an intense feeling of closeness for that one moment.

Long distance relationships are hard to maintain, but if a couple really wants to make it work they can. Luckily in our modern times these relationships don’t have to survive through letters and phone calls. Thanks to the iOS platform and a few clever app designers, lovers that are thousands of miles apart can be closer than some couples that live together.
