How to Make Cheap Phone Calls Abroad
As technology advances to new and unforeseen levels of sophistication, we have now reached the stage where (previously unfathomably) overseas calls are now an option. The only problem, however, is that doing this straight through your network is very likely to break the bank. Fortunately for those of us who do need to make cheap phone calls abroad, though, a few companies have put out products to make the whole process a little less painful.
Because, like anything, it’s cheaper to do things in bulk, some people have had the fantastic idea of dedicating themselves to servicing long distance phone calls. Since it’s their specialisation, using phone cards to make the call is incredibly cheap and will decrease the cost from something comparable to an 0845 number, to about what you’d pay for any other land line to land line connection.
Phone cards are an inexpensive option, and ubiquitously found in newsagents across the country. With this, only one person needs the card, as the other person will not be charged for receiving a an overseas call.
Speaking to Your Phone Provider
If making long distance calls is something you cannot avoid and will be doing on a regular basis, it’s a good idea to first make a call to your network provider and asking if they can set you up with an inclusive deal for calls to the country you’ll need. It’s almost a given that they’ll be receptive to the idea, as they will get to keep you as a customer and have you spend more money on their services, while you get a cut price, saving hundreds of pounds in the long run.
Note that some mobile phone companies also offer this option if you will have to be doing a lot of business abroad. This very rarely comes as standard, but can be bolted on to your package quite inexpensively.
Voice Over Internet Protocol
Also known as VOIP, using the internet to make phone calls is quite possibly the best option if you both have a stable connection. It’s almost universally free, and if you use Skype, Google Talk, or one of the many others providers, you’ll also be able to use video to see each other while talking. The set up cost is as high as an inexpensive headset and webcam, so you can expect to pay about £15 for a lifetime of free calls both overseas and at home. Quite possibly one of the best investments you’ll ever make.
With Skype, if you need to call a land line or mobile instead of another PC, you can buy credits which allow for cheaper calls. As a general rule, this is the cheapest option other than using a phone card, so even if the person you will be calling doesn’t have internet access, it’s definitely worth looking in to the pricing scheme.
Since nothing is perfect, it’s worth noting that if your internet connection is poor on either end, the call will be almost useless. It’s very dependent on the quality of internet as well as the speed, and it’s almost impossible to attempt using dial up or any other older form of internet connection.
Whether you’re in a long distance relationship, or decided to take a job overseas to further your career, there are a lot of options to let you keep in touch with the ones you love. VOIP is quite possibly the best choice considering it’s free and the other fees, in set up costs, are almost unimaginably low. Whichever method you choose, though, it’s guaranteed that you’ll be paying less this way than if you hadn’t taken the time to research your choices.
