How DVR Will Change the Way Your Family Watches Television Forever

Do you remember how you used to comb the TV schedules with the kids, looking for fun stuff to watch during holiday times? You’d circle all the films the whole family wanted to see and then the TV guide would languish on the coffee table, with film after film going unwatched because something else (like a snowball fight!) was happening.

Not any more. Modern TV providers like Time Warner cable are delivering a service that has an inbuilt DVR (Digital Video Recorder) – a device that snatches whatever you’re interested in and stores it on a hard drive for later use.

Digital television is received in MB, like any data. That means it can be stored like data, on what is effectively a computer. You can often store as much as 80 hours of normal quality digital video on your built in DVR – and around 15 hours of High Definition playback. That means that all those films you used to circle you’ll now watch 0 just when you want to!

Schedule clashes are a thing of the past too. When you fire up your Time Warner cable DVR, you’ll notice that you can record a program beaming in on one digital channel, while you actually watch the programming that comes in on another channel. So you never have to decide between one or the other again. You can keep the kids happy with their favourite film on channel 1, knowing that the match is recording on channel 2.

A DVR even stops you having to remember to record consecutive series episodes. Once you start recording a series you will be given the option to set the DVR to automatically record all of that series. No more forgetting to record that all important penultimate episode, no matter what else is going on!

There are plenty of advantages to the DVR playback experience too. No more adverts, for a start. Just fast forward or skip them and you’ll get straight back into the action. You can pause, rewind, fast forward – treat every show as though it were a video or DVD. No more missing the plot because your mum calls and no more losing the thread of what’s happening thanks to the nine millionth ad break.

When you use one of the bigger cable companies – Time Warner cable or Comcast – your digital television and DVR system is segued into your whole home communications system. If you have opted for a full package including phone and internet, you’ll be able to receive call waiting and caller ID message on your DVR user menu. That means you don’t even have to get up from the sofa anymore to find out whose call is interrupted the denouement of your favorite film!

Using a full digital cable system for internet, telephone and TV means that your whole family will change not just its TV watching habits, but the way it consumes all communications. Imagine a world where the kids can be online, safe behind a firewall and the settings you have created for them, while you work and your partner watches TV – and your favorite show is recording in the background. That world is already here!
