Using Twitter to market your blog and business is becoming more commonplace; however a lot of people making Twitter mistakes are under-utilizing it or ineffectively tweeting to their followers. If you’re trying to promote your work via Twitter then make sure that you are doing so the right way and not falling victim to these common pitfalls:

1. Tweets that sound automated

When you’re composing tweets make sure that they have a touch of personality to them so that you don’t come off sounding like a robot. People aren’t interested in automated tweets, but they are interested in tweets that sound like a real person is behind them and that offer useful information.

2. Don’t flood Twitter

Tweeting over and over again back to back is commonly known as “flooding” Twitter and can end up negatively impacting you and costing you followers. You come across as over-aggressive when you send out a lot of tweets in a row, so make sure to put some space in between them to allow time for others to tweet too.

3. Not updating your profile

Having an updated Twitter profile gives your Twitter some much-needed life. It’s important to update your picture from the standard egg to one of you or your logo, to fill out the details for yourself, your blog, or your business, and to get a customized background so people know you are a legitimate person and not just a spam account.

4. Over selling

While you should definitely be promoting new blog posts, products, and services on Twitter, you have to make sure that you also break it up with other tweets as well. No one wants to be sold to all the time so it’s important to vary the types of tweets you’re sending out to your followers.

5. Not utilizing Twitter’s networking capabilities

Twitter is a wonderful resource for connecting with like-minded business people, mentors, and customers or readers who can give helpful feedback, and not utilizing it for these things is a grave mistake. You can constantly improve the quality of your business or your blog through networking on Twitter – take advantage of it!
